PA Liquor Control Board Awards NBBPD Underage Drinking Grant

The PA Liquor Control Board has awarded a $14,388 grant to NBBPD to aid the fight against illegal underage and dangerous alcohol use.

"We are pleased to have been afforded the opportunity to conduct Underage Drinking Initiatives that will reduce or prevent the illegal and unsafe use of alcohol." said James Donnelly, Chief of Police.

The NBBPD Underage Drinking Initiatives will pro-actively address educating and enforcing laws to New Britain Borough's juvenile residents, consisting of over 22% of the community and Delaware Valley College's population of students under the age of 21.

Law enforcement activities include Underage Drinking Details, Roving Patrols and Bicycle Patrols providing a police presence throughout the community.

The New Britain Borough Police Department has a ZERO Tolerance Policy when it comes to Underage Drinking.  The NBBPD works closely with Delaware Valley College Security to ensure all laws are enforced on campus.

Alcohol use under the age of 21 is against the law!

It's a crime to sell or give alcoholic beverages to anyone under 21 - even your own kids.  Penalties include a fine of $1,000-$2,500 for the first violation, $2,500 for each subsequent violation, and up to a year in jail.

Minors convicted of lying about their age or carrying a false ID card to obtain alcohol, purchasing, attempting to purchase, possessing, or transporting alcohol will lose their driver's license for 90 days and face fines up to $300 plus court costs for a first offense.  For youth under 16 or without a driver's license, the 90-day loss goes into effect on their 16th birthday.

Anyone under the age of 21 who is driving with a blood alcohol content of .02% or higher can be arrested for DUI (Driving Under the Influence).

In Pennsyvlania, DUI offenders who are between 18-21 years old are processed the same as adult offenders.  Penalties for a first offense include fines up to $5,000, license suspension of one year, 48 hours to 6 months in jail and attendance at a mandatory alcohol highway safety school.  Juvenile offenders (under age of 18 years old) are processed through juvenile court.  Penalties for juvenile offenders may differ from those of adults.
